Holidays around the world: Deepavali

diwali
There is a party around the world that many of you may not have heard of: Deepavali (Divali). This Hindu festival is known as the festival of lights. It is usually held at the end of October and November. Something that should not be missing during the celebration are the oil lamps that provide that special and mystical light. By lighting these lamps, Hindus are thanking the gods for the happiness, wisdom, peace and wealth they have received.

Hindus consider Deepavali as one of the most important festivals in their culture. There is an interesting legend behind this party. The story goes that Narakasura, a demon, ruled the kingdom of Pradyoshapuram . Under his rule, the villagers suffered many difficulties with their torture. Seeing their evil, Krishna destroyed the demon. On the day Narakasura died he was given the name Deepavali; good triumphed over evil.

The preparation of the event begins two or three weeks before. Hindus will be busy cleaning their houses. Some will even reform them. Families often buy new clothes and accessories to decorate their homes. They usually wake up very early on the morning of Deepavali, around 3am, and the first ritual they will perform will be the oil bath. Then they will dress in their new clothes. Most ladies will wear silk sarees or sets with bright shades.

Hindus do not like to dress in black on that day as they do not consider it appropriate. Visiting them during this party is very interesting as you will have the opportunity to try a wide variety of delicious food dishes. In each house you visit you will be presented with tempting sweets. Some of the most popular sweets are halwa, burfi, and laddu.
