In all the Autonomous Communities of our country you can find many and varied places of interest for all types of tourism. One of the things that I notice the most when I travel somewhere is the castles it has, spectacular fortresses that are always usually part of a natural environment of great beauty.
One of the Autonomous Communities in which you can find more castles is Catalonia , which has more than 40 and all of them form an important part of each town or city in which they are located. Showing them all would be almost impossible, so here is a summary of the best castles in Catalonia :
– Montjuic Castle : it is in Barcelona, on the mountain that bears the same name as the castle and was built in the 17th century to be used as a military fortress. In 1694 it became a castle and in 1808 Napoleon took possession. The city was bombed from this castle in 1842 and years later it was used as a prison. You can visit without making an appointment.
– Miravet Castle : it is in the province of Tarragona and is one of the most beautiful in the entire Community thanks in part to being located on a hill about 100 meters high. It is of Templar architecture and was built between the 9th and 11th centuries. They do guided tours for groups and individuals, although in the case of groups, an appointment must be made. During the visit you can see the parade ground, the stables, the refractory, the treasure tower or the winery, among other rooms.
– Castle of Cardona : it is in the municipality of the same name, in the province of Barcelona, and it is one of the most important medieval fortresses in Catalonia. Its construction dates from the 9th century and is in the Romanesque and Gothic style. It is worth noting the Minyona tower, which is 15 meters high and 10 meters in diameter. It is currently the Duques de Cardona National Tourism Parador and organizes visits for individuals and groups.
– Castle Cartuja de Vallparadís : it is in Tarrasa and dates from the 12th century. In the 14th century it became a Carthusian monastery and has a museum in which there are various archaeological and artistic pieces of great historical value. There are also guided tours.
