Are you planning your next getaway? Well, be very attentive to what we are going to tell you next! And it is that today we are going to talk to you about a different and completely unique destination. We are referring to Marrakech, one of the most important cities in Morocco , as well as being one of the most touristy.
Sightseeing in Marrakech is a fascinating experience in every way, as you will be surprised by the flavors, colors and smells that you breathe as soon as you land at the airport. Of course, where you can most enjoy this explosion of new sensations will be in the Souk of Marrakech, one of the main tourist attractions in the country. Would you like to know more about it? Well, do not miss anything that we tell you below!
Before showing you the Marrakech Souk in more depth, we want to explain in a few words what the souks are. Thus, it is about the traditional markets of the Arab countries. They are generally held outdoors and usually take place on a specific day of the week or at a specific time of the year. In general, they are located in the central square of the town and there are sales of all kinds of items.
The one in Marrakech, the largest in the Maghreb
The Marrakech Souk is considered the largest in the entire Maghreb. In fact, we are talking about miles and miles of alleys that are home to all kinds of establishments. Of course, it must be taken into account that, in general, these are very small positions. Some estimates estimate that there are 100 stores for every 100 meters.
Divided by artisans
The Souk of Marrakech has its entrance in the Jamaa el Fna Square, occupying, as we have just mentioned, a lot of labyrinthine streets. As soon as you enter you will be able to perceive the bustle that exists inside this place, which in some sections is covered by wooden slats to protect the space from the sun . On the other hand, you should bear in mind that the Souk is divided by artisans from different guilds, being able to find the dyers, basket makers or ironmongers, among other trades.
What you can find in the Souk
As we have already told you, the Souk is grouped by different guilds. Thus, in the establishments you will find food, clothes, spices, carpets, handicrafts, typical objects of the region, ingredients to make incantations … Among the most beautiful and famous areas of the place we find the Soyuk de Teinturiers , which is the dyers’ souk , where you will discover a beautiful print of dyed pieces put to dry.
If you have the opportunity to visit the Souk of Marrakech, you should know that haggling is almost mandatory. In fact, you will have to pay at most a third of what they ask you initially. On the other hand, we recommend that you ignore the guides who claim to get better prices in stores, since all they want is to get commissions. Therefore, it is best that you deal with the seller alone.
When to visit the Souk
Although the Souk of Marakech is open every day of the week from 9 in the morning to 7 in the afternoon, except on Friday, which closes in the morning, we recommend that you schedule your visit to this spectacular place in the morning, since in the afternoon you run the risk of finding yourself the odd job closed. Then we leave you with our gallery , where you will find more images of the Marrakech Souk. Do not miss it!
