The Fort of San Cristóbal

The San Cristóbal Fort, also known by the name of the Alfonso XII Fort, is an impressive military fortress located literally inside Mount Ezcaba . It was built between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is located a few kilometers away from the city of Pamplona , in Navarra (Spain).

This incredible place, which looks entirely like a movie set, was originally built as a place from which to defend and control the city. However, the place never fulfilled this function. In fact, it ended up becoming a prison , which was active between 1943 and 1945. About ten years ago, the fortress was definitively abandoned by the army, and in 2001 the Fort was declared "Asset of Cultural Interest". Although in reality today it is in a state of abandonment .

At first, access to the interior of the Fort is not allowed. It is not open like any other monument might be. However, if you walk to see it, you will realize that there are many easily accessible holes through which anyone who wishes can enter. If you dare, you can walk inside and inquire and explore freely. So you can discover places such as the rooms, the central courtyard, the water tanks, the general’s house, the dungeons, the Church or the oven, among many other things.

The Fort of San Cristóbal is a visit that you cannot miss if you pass through Pamplona. It is a place that cannot disappoint you, as it is a unique place that you can also discover for yourself, without routes, guides, or plans to guide you. Something that makes it even more interesting.
