The Solomon Islands archipelago is made up of nearly 1,000 tropical islands scattered in the southwestern Pacific, just east of Papua New Guinea. This remote location has kept them as a jewel of great natural beauty that is gradually becoming a great tourist destination. The tourism industry is characterized by slow development.

One of the main attractions for tourists is the spectacular marine life that the area has. We could say that it is a paradise for divers. The main islands are Guadalcanal, Malaita, Choiseul, Georgia, Nueva, San Cristóbal and Santa Isabel. The capital of Honiara, in Guadalcanal, and also deserves a few days of tourist dedication. In it, you will find a museum and a botanical garden.

The towns and scenic drives are within easy reach of the capital, as are the popular WWII battlefield tours and the towns of Rennell and Bellona. The modern nation of the Solomon Islands is a fusion of two archipelagos, instigated by the British in the last years of the 19th century, and marking the highest point of imperial rivalry in the Pacific between the major European powers.

The Solomon Islands remained under British rule until the 1970s. Self-government was created in 1976 and full independence was achieved two years later. The main political debate since then has been excessive decentralization. An informal atmosphere full of local traditions prevails alongside European customs. A few fun facts: men usually never wear ties and women should dress "modestly", bearing in mind that certain public areas may be reserved exclusively for men.
