The most important cities of Guyana

Georgetown
In South America there are three regions that are unknown to the vast majority of people. These are Guyana , Suriname and French Guiana. Today we want to move to the first of them, a country located on the north coast of South America, although its inhabitants identify more with Europe as the roots of the former colonizers predominate. In fact, English is the only official language.

Guyana is home to extremely rich fauna and flora, as well as hiding impressive landscapes. And, although there are not too many beaches that are worth it, in the interior you can find the tropical jungle, which remains authentic. Today we move to this country, the third smallest in South America, to tell you about its main cities . As always, we have been based on the number of inhabitants. Would you like to join us?

Georgetown

Georgetown1
First of all, we must talk about Georgetown, the capital of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. Located in front of the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the Demerara River, it is the economic and administrative center of the country. It is home to the University of Guyana and Saint George’s Cathedral, an excellent example of Victorian-era architecture.

Linden

Linden
The second most populous city in Guyana is Linden, capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region. Its economy is mainly based on the exploitation of bauxite, a rock composed of hydrated aluminum oxides. And although the city has a large number of mines for this mineral, many are in disuse.

New Amsterdam

New-Amsterdam
In third position we find New Amsterdam, which is located just 90 kilometers from the capital, in the East Berbice-Corentyne region. Located next to the mouth of the Berbice River, it is considered an important port for the exploitation of bauxite.

Corriverton

Corriverton
The fourth most populous city in Guyana is Corriverton, which also belongs to the East Berbice-Corentyne region. It is located on the eastern border of the country, opposite the city of New Nickerie in Suriname. Its population descends from Hindus and Africans and it is common to find Hindu temples , mosques and churches.

Rose hall

Rose-hall
Another important city in this South American country is Rose Hall, which is located in the same region as the previous ones, 22 kilometers from New Amsterdam. It was also founded by Dutch settlers, although it was later transferred to the descendants of plantation slaves .

Skeldon

Skeldon
The sixth most populous city in Guyana is Skeldon, which also belongs to the East Berbice-Corentyne region. It is located on the estuary of the Courantyne River, which forms the country’s border with Suriname. It is important to note that sugar production forms the backbone of the local economy.

Rosignol

Rosignol
We must also talk about Rosignol, a town located in the Mahaica-Berbice region, which is located on the west bank of the Berbice River, opposite New Amsterdam. The population is mainly made up of people of Indian and African origin. Although it has improved a lot in recent years, poverty is a major problem in the city.

Mahaica

Mahaica
The eighth most important city in Guyana in terms of population is Mahaica, which is located in the Demerara-Mahaica region, like Georgetown which, as we have mentioned before, is the capital of the country.

Ituni

Ituni
Finally, we want to talk about Ituni, which belongs to the Upper Demerara-Berbice region. Its economy is based mainly on the extraction of bauxite. And while it was a thriving place in the 1970s that had become famous for its nightlife and excellent entertainment, today poverty is a problem.
