Bilbao, a city crowned by the guggenheim

Located in the north of Spain, Bilbao is the capital of Biscay. With a population of 360,000 inhabitants , it is one of the most industrialized cities in the country and one of those that contributes the most to the national GDP. Its metropolitan area covers a total of 900,000 inhabitants, thus making it the fifth largest city in Spain.

Climate

The climate is humid oceanic and temperatures are usually mild throughout the year. The sea water, not particularly hot, allows bathers to take a dip in summer at around 23º C. Normally, the so-called "chirimiri" rains (of little consideration) and very cloudy days that do not invite optimism abound . Rainfall is more frequent in spring and autumn, with mild winters and not excessively hot summers.

Demography

Bilbao, as we have mentioned, has 360,000 inhabitants. However, not long ago, it had 433,000 inhabitants and was the sixth most populous city in the country . Restructuring in the industrial sectors has caused this figure to drop considerably. The formerly predominant steel and metal sector has given way to other newer sectors encompassed in the tertiary. This has caused populations like Sestao to have lost many inhabitants.

Traditions

Bilbao is a city where traditions are lived and enjoyed to the skin. The gastronomic culture is undoubtedly the pillar of these traditions. There are many high-level restaurants where you can enjoy the best Basque cuisine.
While drinking "txikitos" (small glasses of wine) or "zuritos" (of beer), it is normal to see many locals at certain times going through the bars of the city while tasting the usual "pintxos" , small aperitifs of different ingredients. These range from the simplest to the most imaginative and far-fetched.
Another tradition is imposed by its football team, Athletic Club de Bilbao . It has the honor of being the only team with Barcelona and Real Madrid that has always been in the first division. In addition, he has always done it with players from the Basque Country , something that gives even more merit to the feat.
