Until the end of the First World War, Hungary belonged to the great Austro-Hungarian Empire. In fact, it was a great power until the end of the conflict, thanks to its privileged geographical position, among other things. In some moments of history, it even became one of the cultural centers of the Western world. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that many villages have passed through here, which is reflected in the art, gastronomy, traditions, folklore and customs.

Although the main attraction in Hungary is the beautiful and picturesque city of Budapest, it should not be forgotten that this European country is also home to other interesting places, such as some spas on Lake Balaton, which fill up with tourists when summer arrives. In addition, you can find beautiful medieval cities and charming towns . Today we are talking about some of the most beautiful, although, unfortunately, we have left some beautiful in the pipeline. First, we talk about Hollókő, a town on the list of World Heritage of UNESCO. Originally from the 13th century, the town is home to one of the best-preserved castles in the country. And that throughout history the town has been destroyed on numerous occasions. Of course, we also have to highlight the old town.


Another town worth visiting is Visegrád, which is located on the right bank of the Danube River, north of Budapest. It is known for housing the ruins of the summer palace of King Matías Corvino, the first great civil building in the Italian Romanesque style outside of this country, as well as for its medieval citadel.


Very close to Budapest we can find Szentendre, a town located on the banks of the Danube that surprises with its cobbled streets, its pastel-colored houses, its souvenir shops and its walks along the river. It also houses archaeological remains, Orthodox churches, and many museums. Many excursions to this beautiful corner are offered from the Hungarian capital.


We also want to tell you about Koszeg, a town that hides an important heritage, highlighting the Jurisics castle, its medieval town, its charming main square and its different fountains. Also, you should know that in this fairy tale town you can walk along beautiful trails.


We continue our tour of the most beautiful villages in Hungary in Lillafüred, where at the end of the 19th century a spectacular tourist resort was built on Lake Hámori. We are referring to the Palace Hotel, which has hanging gardens, a waterfall, caves … Without a doubt, this is the main attraction of this Hungarian town.


How could it be otherwise, we also have to talk about Zebegény, a picturesque town located in the county of Pest, on the Danube Bend, which offers beautiful beaches and mountains and forests. In fact, it is the ideal destination for travelers seeking tranquility and fresh air. Of course, you will also find important monuments, such as the Palace, Dory’s castle or the valley bridge.


On the shores of Lake Balaton we find the town of Tihany, which offers one of the best views over this lake. On the other hand, it is important to bear in mind that in the center of the town is the Benedictine abbey , where King Andrew I of Hungary is buried. What’s more, throughout history, the abbey has had great importance.


Finally, we have to talk about Sopron, a town located near the Austrian border that houses some of the most interesting monuments, such as the Town Hall or the Medieval Tower. Of course, we must highlight its historic center and its baroque mansions and palaces.
