Many believe that when the summer ends, the opportunities to have fun outside the home also come to an end, but nothing is further from the truth. And it is that although we can not sunbathe, take a dip in the pool or have a drink at the beach bar, during the fall we can enjoy the natural spaces of our country in a different way. And you already know that during this time of year the forests and mountains acquire a very special tone.
Today at Vuela Viajes we want to tell you about one of those forests that is worth visiting during the fall. It is the so-called National Monument of the Secuoyas of Monte Cabezón , a place located in the autonomous community of Cantabria. A Protected Natural Area
The trees we are going to talk about today are not just any trees, but the Secuoyas of Monte Cabezón have a lot of "titles" behind them: they are a "Protected Natural Area" of Cantabria, they have been declared a Natural Monument by the Government of Cantabria and were included in the Network of Natural Areas Protected by the Law of Cantabria for the Conservation of Nature. As they tell us from the official Cantabria Tourism page, this natural monument is actually a 2.5 hectare forest of redwoods, trees scientifically known as sequoia sempervirens , which is located on the Monte de Las Navas, very close from the town of Cabezón de la Sal.
The history of the forest
Redwoods are rare trees in Spain. In fact, we can only find some small masses in a semi-natural state. However, in the 1940s, in the midst of the Franco regime, someone came up with the idea of planting more than 800 specimens here to supply wood to the industry in the area, since it is a rapidly growing area. However, they were not cut down, since when the time came to do so they no longer interested anyone. Luckily, thanks to this fact, today we can enjoy a tremendously beautiful forest.
Spectacular views
Today 848 redwoods survive, with an average height of 36 meters. As for the average perimeter, it is 1.6 meters. In case you didn’t know, redwoods are evergreen trees, so they keep their leaves all year long. Thus, you will enjoy the forest during all seasons. And it is that the views both vertically and horizontally are really spectacular. On the other hand, it is important to note that this natural monument also includes 25 feet of the pinus radiata species. The area is suitable to be able to explore it comfortably. In fact, the route, which is circular, has hardly any difficulties. Of course, it is important to bear in mind that the tour is not prepared for wheelchairs or baby carriages.
Sequoia
Redwoods have their origin in America. In fact, its name comes from the word "sequioah", a Cherokee Indian who invented an alphabet for the language of his tribe. The tree is characterized by its robustness and the conical shape of its crown. Under normal conditions it can exceed 50 meters in height, while it can live from 1,000 to 3,000 years.
