The beautiful Macquarie Island in Australia

As a general rule, all the islands are beautiful, thanks to the fact that they perfectly combine the great variety of landscapes and natural elements that they have. Within that beauty, there are normalitas and there are spectacular ones, and the latter is the case of the island that I just discovered in a magazine and that has left me absolutely enchanted. This is Macquarie Island , which is in Australia.

It is located specifically between Australia and Antarctica , in one of the southernmost points of the country and which belongs to the state of Tasmania , one of the best-known Australian places in the world. This island is a beautiful natural park, which makes it one of the most beautiful and spectacular islands in the world, with truly fascinating landscapes thanks to its flora and fauna, which are very diverse.

World Heritage

This island is one of the select places that are recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, mainly due to two reasons. First of all, on its surface there are tectonic plates that as a general rule you would find several kilometers under the sea. On the other hand, in Macquarie you will find a large population of royal penguins that flock to this island to lay their eggs. A show like no other.

Of interest

Less than 50 people live on the island, almost all of them workers at the conservation center. An important meteorological station was here between 1911 and 1914, although its penguins are undoubtedly its great attraction, as well as other seabirds. Thousands of rabbits caused erosion many years ago, which destroyed many areas, but today they are almost completely eradicated, both rabbits and cats and rats.

How to get there and what to do

Getting to Macquarie Island will not be easy, and you will need a lot of time to do it. Departing from Hobart , in Tasmania, it takes about 4 days to do it on a small cruise, and there are many companies that make the journey. It takes the same time leaving New Zealand . It should be noted that there is no port on the island as it is totally unspoilt, although this is undoubtedly one of its great attractions. The perfect place to enjoy nature without seeing any buildings that man has built to spoil it.
