Considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia by UNESCO , the Angkor Archaeological Park extends about 400 square kilometers, including dozens of temples, hydraulic structures, communication routes and the wooded area. Here are the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, which cover the period from the 9th to the 15th century and which played an important role in the political and cultural development of the region. Among them, we highlight the famous Angkor Wat temple and the Bayon temple, which can boast of having numerous sculptural decorations. Such is the importance of this place, that UNESCO has carried out a program to safeguard both this symbolic site and its surroundings.

Essential visits

Although, as we have mentioned, within the complex there are numerous monuments that are worth visiting, there are some that should be a mandatory visit, such as Angkor Wat, which is the main temple; Angkor Thom, a 9 square kilometer fortified city; Preah Khan, a temple located northeast of Angkor Thom; Phnom Bakheng, a temple of Hindu aesthetics dedicated to Shiba; Srah Srang, an artificial lake; Banteay Kdei; a Bayon-style temple; and Ta Prohm; a monastery and school to teach the Buddhist faith.

Tips for visiting the place

As there are so many places to visit, it is important that you keep several things in mind if you are lucky enough to visit this gem of archeology. For example, you should know that there are three entry options: for one ($ 20), three ($ 40) or five days ($ 60), which can be done in the course of a week. With three days you will have enough to enjoy this place, although, if you have time to spare, we recommend that you choose the last option, since you will be able to enjoy the tour more calmly. In addition, it is important that you know that there are different options to visit the place: a tour in a kind of minibus, by private car, by taxi, on foot, by bicycle … You will only have to choose the one that best suits your tastes and needs. . On the other hand, we recommend that you try to be at the site during sunrise and sunset, as this is when the temples look most beautiful.
