When we organize a trip we always think about the typical destinations that everyone goes to, leaving aside a lot of places that are fantastic but perhaps not as famous as the great European capitals, a route through the United States or a few days of relax in the Caribbean.
That is why today I would like to tell you about Maribor , a beautiful Slovenian city with truly spectacular landscapes. Fortunately, more and more people travel to Eastern countries, and in that part of Europe there are places that are worth visiting. Well, Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia and is on the banks of the Drava River, which also makes it one of the most beautiful European cities.
It is located in the Lower Styria region, next to the Austrian border , so it is also a good option to take a tour of several countries on our continent. It is surrounded by several mountains and valleys, making nature a very important point and what stands out the most in Maribor and its surroundings.
There are many places of interest in Maribor , such as its fantastic Gothic Cathedral from the 12th century, the Renaissance-style Town Hall or an imposing Castle dating from the 15th century. The historic center brings together the most important places in the city and preserves that aroma of history that we like to see in the most central areas of cities, with cobbled streets, squares, terraces and buildings of different styles.
On the outskirts of Maribor you have the Mariborsko Pohorje , one of the most important ski resorts in Slovenia and an ideal destination for lovers of this sport. Several world alpine skiing championships have been played there. As for leisure, there is a lot of nightlife and a lot of cultural offerings, especially in June when the Lent Festival is held, during which you can enjoy various concerts, theaters and various activities.
Next year will be the perfect time to visit Maribor as it has been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2012 , so there will be many cultural activities throughout the year and various events that will make your trip unforgettable.
