We want to start by talking about Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, which not only houses one of the most beautiful coastlines on the entire island, but also preserves an old castle and a historic center that has been restored in recent years. Special mention should be made of the old district of Castello.
Alghero
We also have to talk about Alghero, a city located in the province of Sassari. If you have the opportunity to visit this place it will be as if you were traveling back to medieval times. With narrow and cobbled streets, this city is surrounded by ancient walls and fortified towers. In addition, it houses historical buildings, small squares and shops.
Castelsardo
In the province of Sassari there is also Castelsardo, a village located on a rock that offers wonderful views of the sea. Here you can discover the medieval castle of the Doria and the walls, as well as different religious buildings of interest.
Orgosolo
The city of Orgosolo has nothing to do with the others but, without a doubt, it is also worth visiting. And it is that, although for centuries it was considered one of the most dangerous places in the world, when registering a large number of deaths from revenge, today it is surprising for the murals that adorn its facades.
Bosa
Another corner that we want to recommend you is Bosa, a small town located in the northwest of the island that preserves the typical buildings of Mediterranean and Sardinian architecture. In fact, its colorful houses are charming. Of course, we must highlight the Malaspina Castle, from the 12th century.
Barumini deposit
As we mentioned at the beginning, Sardinia preserves important historical vestiges. One of the most important is in Barumini, a municipality located 50 km north of Cagliari. We are referring to Su Nuraxi, a complex of Nuragic culture recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Tharros
Of course, we must also highlight Tharros, an ancient coastal town in Sardinia that is currently an archaeological site. Founded by the Phoenicians, the city is now an open-air museum and in fact excavations are still going on.
Nuraghe di Palmavera
Another site worth visiting is that of Nuraghe di Palmavera (Nuragas de Palmavera), located very close to Alghero. It is a town of the Nuragic culture that is very well preserved. If you have the opportunity to visit this place you can do it on your own or hire a guided tour.
Neptune’s Grotto
How could it be otherwise, we also have to talk about Neptune’s Grotto, a grotto that houses magnificent karst formations. More than 10 million years old, it was discovered in the 18th century by a local fisherman. Since then, it has been a major tourist attraction.
The Gorropu Gorge
Finally, we want to talk about the Gorropu Gorge, an open crevasse hidden in the Supramonte mountain range. It is one of the deepest canyons in Europe and is surrounded by legends.
