Have you heard of the small town of Fucking (Austria)? And what about the Principality of Sealand 10 km. from the English coast of Suffolk or from the "town" of Erving’s Location in the North American state of New Hampshire ?
Well, today we are going to tell the story of Sealand . When we recover from the shock we will show you other strange places.
We go back to World War II . To defend against the attacks of the German aviation, the British installed some maritime platforms. When the war ended, the platforms were abandoned and some people took the opportunity to install pirate radio stations . Among them was Paddy Roy Bates , who founded Essex radio, which like the rest of the pirates was shut down. He would open a radio and they would close it, it was like that for a long time.
On September 2, 1967 Roy arrived at Roughs Tower and found that he was in international waters. He then scrapped the radio project and after a small trial, which came out in his favor, he moved with his wife and son and founded the “Principality of Sealand” . He created a shield and flag, a coin (the US equivalent of the Sealand dollar), an official language (English) and a motto “E Mare Libertas” .
And of course, as a good nation, it has its Constitution , which was drawn up in 1975. Some parts of it:
– Any ordinance enforced in Sealand through the properly constituted Senate shall take precedence over such laws.
– The official language of Sealand is English and all official documentation must be in that language.
