Just because the end of summer is around the corner doesn’t mean we have to be sad. It is worth that the warmest season of the year allows us to carry out activities as fun as bathing on the beach or going for tapas or chiringuito, but autumn offers us the possibility of enjoying nature in a unique way, so we can take advantage of our Free days to know some of the natural wonders of our country.

If you live in Castilla y León or have the opportunity to visit this autonomous community during the fall, we recommend that you take an excursion to Faedo de Ciñera , a beautiful forest located in the province of León. Would you like to find out more about it? Well, do not miss anything that we tell you below!

A forest in an excellent state of conservation

Faedo de Ciñera is located in Ciñera de Gordón, a town in La Pola de Gordón, which is located in the province of León. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that it is part of the Alto Benasga Biosphere Reserve . It is a beech forest with more than 500 years old that is preserved in excellent condition. In fact, it is considered one of the best cared for forests in Spain. Much of the “fault” is with the neighbors, who are especially involved in their care.

The beech trees, the real protagonists

Unlike other beautiful forests that we can find throughout the Spanish territory, such as the Fageda d’en Jordà or the Hayedo de Montejo, the Faedo de Ciñera is quite small. However, the visit to this place is worth it for many reasons. The most important is to contemplate the vegetation that has grown over the centuries thanks to the Arroyo del Villar. Logically, the protagonists of this environment are beech trees, especially the one known as Fagus , which is believed to be around 800 years old, being one of the longest-lived in the entire country.

Picnic area

If you want to spend the day in this forest, you will have it very easy, since right at the entrance there are several picnic areas with tables where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. In addition, it is important that you bear in mind that the residents of Ciñera de Gordón have created a wooden path to preserve the delicate forest floor.

A fantastic route

You can enter this magical forest from the town of Ciñera de Gordón. Before arriving, you will find a kind of open-air museum where you will discover the mining tradition of the area. Afterwards, you will arrive in the forest and enjoy looking at the lush trees, the musk-covered rocks, the meadows and the animals. Once you have traveled the Faedo you can cross the Hoces del Villar, which will take you to the town of Villar del Puerto . This is the route that the miners who lived in this town made for decades throughout the 20th century.

In autumn and spring

Although it is worth taking this excursion at any time of the year, the truth is that in spring and, especially, in autumn, the forest acquires a special charm . Of course, it is recommended that you bring some warm clothing to protect yourself from the cold that it may get. And it is necessary to bear in mind that beech trees grow in humid and shady places.
