One of the southernmost beech forests in Europe
As we told you, today we move to Castilla-La Mancha to discover one of its most beautiful forests. It is about the Hayedo de Tejera Negra, which is located in Cantalojas, in the province of Guadalajara. It is a beech forest that is part of the Ayllón massif, at the eastern end of the Central System. In addition, it belongs to the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara Natural Park, which was created in 2011. It is important to bear in mind that it is one of the southernmost beech forests on the continent.
An exceptional microclimate
As explained on the Castilla la Mancha Tourism website, Tejera Negra is an "exceptional microclimate" that preserves the last beech forest in southern Europe. We are talking about a forest that grows in two valleys that are flanked by tall and rather sharp rocky ridges. On the other hand, it must be taken into account that the beech forest is fed by two rivers that are born in the La Buitrera glacier: Lillas and Zarzas.
Flora and fauna
As you may have imagined, the greatest attraction of this place is its beech forest, which not only surprises for its colors, but also for the impenetrable silence that can be enjoyed inside. Of course, beyond beech trees, the forest is home to species such as oaks, melojos, scots pines, holly, birch and yew. Special mention should be made of the Boletus Edulis , which grows in its soils in autumn. On the other hand, you should know that this forest is a good place to appreciate some animals. The most common are roe deer, golden eagle, foxes and wild boars, although it is also possible to see wild cats, marten, weasels, badgers, and nocturnal birds of prey.
Trekking
Would you like to tour this wonderful forest of Guadalajara? Well, you should know that there are two routes designed for this: the Seda de Carretas and the Senda del Robledal. Both are circular and allow you to contemplate the charms of the beech forest. In addition, you should know that there is a circular route for bicycles, as well as an Interpretation Center. Without a doubt, the best time to visit this place is in autumn, as it is dyed in hundreds of shades of red and ocher. Of course, remember that it is mandatory to reserve a place to access the indoor car park by car (during the rest of the year it is advisable). Finally, we want to comment that it is not advisable to visit this forest in winter, since the snow is present for two or three months. In addition, the cold is very intense.
