Italy is a country that I love. You already know that. I like practically everything: the language, the beaches, the gastronomy … If we add to that that there are towns as curious as Civita di Bagnoregio , it is normal that one wants to visit it every year.

First of all, it must be said that only about four people reside there permanently and that it receives the nickname of "the people that dies." Then I explain why.

The story of an abandonment

The Tiber Valley is seen like nowhere else from Civita de Bagnoregio. The Etruscans founded it 2,500 years ago , but were not aware of how dangerous it could be because of its location. It is right on top of a hill of clay that is not immune to landslides and erosion, which is why it cannot be guaranteed that it will remain standing for life. In fact, there are buildings that have disappeared collapsing from their 443 meters high.

Only 4 brave people dare to live in the town, while the rest of the houses, more or less a hundred, are like the second residence of personalities of culture and the artistic world, who undoubtedly seek inspiration among its streets.

This medieval relic, which seems to be suspended in a vacuum, is about 120 kilometers from Rome and came to be dominated by the Romans, who, realizing its instability, decided to abandon it.

If you want to visit Civita di Bagnoregio, you should know that the entrance has a cost of 3 euros per person during the week, a rate that rises up to 5 euros on weekends. Why? Well, because you have to pay for the maintenance it requires to continue standing.

What is worth seeing?

You will not be able to get to the town by car, since the only way to do it is on foot. You have to cross a reinforced concrete bridge that was built by the inhabitants themselves with the aim of facilitating their day-to-day life and attracting tourists, who are not only amazed by the 300-meter bridge that connects it to Bagnoregio, but also They hallucinate with the Puerta San Maria and with the Romanesque church of San Donato located in the main square. In addition, it does not lack a small museum called Museo Antica Civitas that is located inside a house.

Finally, you should know that during tourism time you will not be alone, since there are restaurants, bars, shops and even bed & breakfasts so you can spend the night there.
