It also contains treasures from the Aztec, Mayan, and Olmec civilizations, and the most famous is the Stone of the Sun, also called the Aztec Calendar. The museum also shows rural life in present-day Mexico.

It is a government building, and tourists can tour it on an interior tour to see the beautiful murals painted by Diego Rivera, which represent the history of Mexico through the centuries. Independence Day is commemorated every year from the main balcony of the National Palace from where the president utters the Cry of Independence.
