The Caves of Nerja are in the municipality of Nerja and more specifically in the town of Maro. They belong to the province of Malaga so if you walk around the area it is a place truly worth seeing and worth visiting. They are more than four kilometers long, although only a third of that distance is considered of tourist interest. They were discovered in 1959.

They have three entrances, of which two are natural and one artificial that is enabled for visits. Within the Caves of Nerja there are two main areas of tourist interest: the Bajas Galleries and the High and New Galleries , the latter discovered in the 70s and which has a narrow passage to access a room called Cataclysm , although as a general rule they are not visitable. The cave rooms are very spacious, they have formations of stalactites and stalagmites and their ceilings are high. Spectacular stalactite formations can be seen in areas that are not exposed to the public.

In the route that the visitors take, the extremely high vaults can be appreciated, which constitute a quarter of the total route of the Caves of Nerja . Several rooms appear consecutively and when you go down some stairs you arrive at the Lobby Room , where there is an impressive archaeological site with several panels of paintings and ceramic remains that were found there.

One of the most spectacular rooms is the Cataclysm Room , where you can see the traces of the earthquake that occurred in the area eight thousand years ago. In the Sala de la Torca is where the famous cave paintings are. In the Room of the Ghosts you can see symbolic representations of animals and, finally, in the Bethlehem Room you can see a burial of more than 6,000 years.
