Of all the cultural places you can visit in Madrid, one of my favorites is the Reina Sofía Museum , located in the old General Hospital and located in the Atocha area. It is the southern vertex in the well – known Madrid Art Triangle that is completed by the Prado Museum and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. It is on the list of the 20 most visited museums in the world and when it was founded it did so to accommodate the Contemporary Art collections that could not go in the Prado Museum.
It is an important museum internationally but not so much since modern art has a very irregular trajectory in Spain, so it is not possible to equate it to famous museums of the genre such as the Moma or the Georges Pompidou Center. In its extensive Library there are more than 100,000 books, 3,500 sound recordings and about 1,000 videos. The best-known work is undoubtedly Picasso’s Guernica , and there are many people who pay admission just to see it and who are next to the many sketches that were made before finishing it.
In addition to Picasso, it also has an excellent collection of Salvador Dalí, partly thanks to the fact that this master of the art donated many of his works to the State and these were distributed between this museum and the Dalí Theater-Museum in Figueras. There are also works by a multitude of Spanish and foreign authors, such as Joan Miró , Antonie Tapies, Pablo Palazuelo, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Yves Klein …
To get to the Reina Sofía Museum, just take the metro or bus to Atocha station and it is right in front of you. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. On Tuesdays it closes. The entrance is very cheap, and you can see the entire collection and the temporary exhibitions for € 6, and if you only want to see the temporary exhibitions, you will get € 3. In addition, groups of 15 or more members and cultural volunteers have a 50% discount. You also have several ways to enter for free: if you are under 18 years old, over 65 or retired, unemployed, member of any museum foundation or association or if you go on Saturdays after 2:30 p.m. or on Sundays at any time.
