One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War

As we have just mentioned, the town of Belchite is known in our country for having been one of the bloodiest scenes of the Spanish Civil War. The town was completely destroyed after the battle that was fought here between August 24 and September 6, 1937. At that time, the town had about 3,812 inhabitants, but, unfortunately, it was totally destroyed after the battle. In addition, more than 6,000 people, including civilians and soldiers, died. Curiously, after the battle, Francisco Franco did not want to rebuild the town, but decided to leave the ruins intact to remember his victory. The new Belchite was built next to the ruins, a construction carried out by prisoners of war.
