The most important glacier in Los Glaciares National Park

How could it be otherwise, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the best known in Los Glaciares National Park. Located in front of the Magallanes peninsula, specifically 78 kilometers from El Calafate , it is the only one that can be seen from land, so it is also the most visited.

A glacier surrounded by a beautiful landscape

As you can see for yourself in the images that we show you in the gallery, it is a gigantic mass of ice that surprises, in addition to its extension (we are talking about a glacier with a front of 5 kilometers wide), because it is surrounded of a beautiful landscape of forests and mountains. Therefore, it is not surprising that this place is one of the most visited in Argentina , both by national and foreign tourists. On the other hand, it must be taken into account that the glacier reaches 60 meters above the water and measures about 257 square kilometers.

Detachments

One of the main attractions of a visit to this glacier is that it is very normal to see landslides. And although in most cases they are small pieces of ice, in others they are large walls. This is because this great mass of ice does not stop advancing, causing them to accumulate and then break and detach gigantic blocks of ice on its front that, as we have told you before, is 5 kilometers wide. The falling chunks of ice cause eerie noises that many compare to the sounds of thunder. In addition, you can also hear how the ice is cracking inside.
