Many are counting the days until the arrival of Halloween , a party imported from the Anglo-Saxon world that has more and more faithful in Spain, something that does not surprise us at all, since it is a most fun holiday. However, there are some traditions of our country that are still preserved, such as visiting the cemetery where our deceased relatives are on All Saints’ Day.

Taking advantage of the fact that November 1 is very close, today at Vuela Viajes we want to tell you about one of the most beautiful graveyards in Spain. We are referring to the Luarca Cemetery , which is also one of the most photographed. Would you like to find out more about it? Well then you can’t miss anything that we tell you below! Above all, do not forget to take a look at the gallery that we offer you at the end.

A privileged location

The cemetery that we show you today is located in Luarca, a parish in the council of Valdés, in the Principality of Asturias. Specifically, the cemetery is located on a slope of the promontory of La Atalaya. As you can see for yourself in the images that we offer you in our gallery, the cemetery is located in a privileged place, where you can get magnificent views of the sea and the mountains. And although these types of places usually bring a feeling of nervousness and restlessness, in this case what we can notice is an atmosphere of relaxation . And it is that few people associate the beauty of this place with what it truly hides: death.

Thanks to its location, the cemetery is much more than a place to bury the deceased, it is a mixture of a romantic walk, a coastal observatory and a viewpoint. Of course, the ones that most often visit the cemetery are the seagulls. In addition, it must be borne in mind that its modernist pantheons are important prototypes of funerary architecture.

Severo Ochoa

Beyond the views that can be obtained from here, the cemetery also stands out for the beauty of its funeral chapels and pantheons, which provide that melancholic touch typical of cemeteries. In addition, it is important to bear in mind that the remains of Severo Ochoa, Nobel Prize in Medicine , who was born in this town, rest here. The Asturian is not alone, but lies next to his wife, Carmen Grande Covián. The following phrase can be read on the marble plaque on the tombstone:

Here Carmen and Severo Ochoa lie. United a lifetime for love. Now eternally bound by death.

Are you not surprised that you did not find any mention of his brilliant professional career ? Other famous people who rest in the Luarca Cemetery are the writer and journalist Evaristo Casariego, the Indian Ramón García, the businessman Vicente Trelles (founder of the Trelles Bank) and the writer and poet Nene Losada.

Before leaving you with the images of the cemetery, we want to talk a little about Luarca, one of the most beautiful fishing villages on the entire north coast. In fact, in some moments in recent history it has been considered the most beautiful town in Spain (we include it in our article “The most beautiful towns in Asturias”). In addition to having an important fishing port, this town stands out for being part of the coastal Camino de Santiago. Therefore, very close you can find a pilgrims’ hostel.
