A lake with an island in the center
Located on the eastern border of Las Hurdes, near Riomalo de Abajo , the Melero Meander is formed by the Alagón River. As you can see for yourself by taking a look at the images that we offer you in the gallery, it is a natural setting of great beauty, as well as being unique. And it is that the course of the river is interrupted by a peninsula that creates the illusion of a lake with an island in the middle. As for the landscape, it is characterized by being wild and transmitting tranquility and peace.
From the Mirador de la Antigua
The best way to enjoy the Melero Meander is to contemplate it from the Mirador de la Antigua . From this place you can contemplate spectacular panoramic views. Although in this place there is a parking lot to leave the cars, it is highly recommended to walk there. To get to the same viewpoint from the siding you will have to go through a slate path.
Trekking
Although, as we have mentioned, it is possible to get to the Melero Meander by car, the truth is that hiking in the area is highly recommended. To get to the viewpoint on foot, you must start from Riomalo de Abajo, a farmhouse in the council of Caminomorisco. Here you will find the odd restaurant where you can enjoy some typical products, as well as see samples of the architecture of Las Hurdes. The good thing about this trail is that it is perfectly signposted, as well as being of medium-low difficulty. It starts from the natural pools of the farmhouse, an area where it is common to find bathers in summer. Along the way you can already contemplate the meanders that the river forms, all with a pine forest as a backdrop. After 3 kilometers you will reach the viewpoint, from where you can enjoy the views at any time of the year. Also, you should bear in mind that the Alagón River is perfect for fishing. You can reach the base of the meander by a fork in the road, although the best way to enjoy it is from above.
